A review desk, not a billboard

Tunnelgauge scores VPNs on evidence a reader can check for themselves. That means published third-party audits and the dates they were signed, the jurisdiction a provider answers to, the protocols it actually ships, and the price you pay on the plan most people buy. It does not mean speed charts we cannot reproduce or vague promises of total anonymity, because a VPN cannot deliver that.

Every provider gets a Gauge Score out of 100, built from five weighted pillars — privacy and trust, security, value, features, and transparency. We show the pillar breakdown next to the number so you can re-add the weights and argue with our maths. When we get something wrong, that is how you will catch us.

Why our two top-of-mind picks pay us nothing

Most of the sites that rank at the top of a search for best VPN are owned by the companies they review. Kape Technologies owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access — and also owns the review sites vpnMentor, Wizcase and SafetyDetectives. Ziff Davis owns IPVanish and also owns PCMag and CNET. We are not part of that circle, and we prove it by recommending Mullvad and Windscribe where the evidence supports it, even though neither runs an affiliate program and neither pays us a cent.

Start with the full ranking of the best VPNs for 2026, read how the Gauge Score is built, or jump to the best VPN for privacy if that is the only pillar you care about.

Common questions

What is the best VPN in 2026?
By our evidence-weighted score, Proton VPN and NordVPN sit at the top — Proton for its open-source apps and Swiss jurisdiction, NordVPN for the widest feature set and a sixth no-logs audit. The honest answer is that the best VPN depends on your threat model, so we publish the full pillar breakdown rather than crowning one winner for everyone.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No. A VPN encrypts your traffic and hides your IP from websites and your network, but it moves your trust to the VPN provider, who can technically see what your ISP used to. That is why we weight independent no-logs audits and jurisdiction so heavily — anonymity claims are marketing, verifiable logging behaviour is not.
What does a 'no-logs' VPN actually mean?
It means the provider states it does not record what you do or store data that could identify your sessions. We only treat a no-logs claim as credible when an independent firm has audited it and published a dated report, or when the claim has survived a real court demand. We cite the auditor and date for every provider we score.
Why do you recommend VPNs that don't pay you?
Because independence is the whole point of a review desk. Mullvad and Windscribe run no affiliate program, so we earn nothing by naming them — and we do, because on the evidence they earn a recommendation. Where a link is an affiliate link, we say so inline, and a commission never moves a score.
Is a free VPN safe to use?
Some are, most are not. A reputable freemium tier from an audited provider (Proton VPN Free, Windscribe) is genuinely safe; a no-name free app that funds itself by selling your traffic is the opposite of privacy. We only point readers to free tiers backed by the same audits as the paid plans.
